Douglas Stewart

Douglas Stewart was born and raised in Sydney (Australia). The son of art loving parents, he developed an interest and appreciation of art at a young age.

Douglas left school at sixteen to study Musical Composition and is an accomplished musician playing four different instruments. While he didn’t move into a career in music, he continues to write and play music with his preferred genres being blues and folk.

Douglas moved from Sydney to Melbourne, where he worked in some of the State’s most well known galleries. It was while he was working as an Art Director that he really started to focus on his own creative passion.  He was soon sponsored by a number of businesses to produce art and run exhibitions for charities.

Douglas is a multi-discipline abstract artist with his main focus on painting, sculpture and sketching.  He mostly works with ink, acrylic and oil on canvas. He mostly works with inks, acrylics, oils and resins, using either canvas or salvaged furniture and wood as the medium. He has an interest in multi-layered works and his style has been described as “ADHD meets abstract expressionism, with a spoonful of street art styling”.

Now Stewart’s work can be found in number of galleries around Hepburn Springs, Daylesford and Melbourne.

While canvas is currently his most commonly used medium, Stewart feels strongly about reducing landfill and transforms “trash” into artworks using discarded window frames, table tops, doors and old wooden boards. Stewart hopes to show that there is beauty in accidents and flaws.

Douglas Stewart pieces are often identifiable by the outlines, smudges, multi-layered scrapes and repeated shapes used, and also the strong use of drips and layered splatters.
